Roulette is a well-known casino game also referred to as the black jack or the wheel; it is also called the house or the wheel after its former name, which referred to the Roman road on which the game was first developed. Roulette also has many names throughout the world, including French and Italian, Spanish, and the American version of Roulette. The original French name for Roulette was La Rochard, which literally means wheel. In modern times, Roulette is played in casinos all over the world, and is very popular among gamers.

Roulette refers to the number of turns a player has to complete before their ball lands in the center of the table. That ball becomes part of a sequence of spins, referred to as a ‘run’ on the Roulette wheel. Players may place bets on the runs that they create, with each spin equaling one bet. All bets are final, regardless of the direction the runs take; however, the dealer will stop spins at the last possible turn, after counting the amount of bets raised on that pass.

Each spin occurs separately, with the same number of bets as each previous spin. The first step in playing roulette is betting. The player places a bet equal to the total amount of chips the dealer has, up to the maximum bet limit set by the dealer. After all winning bets have been made, the player marks the ball and removes it from the wheel; the dealer then deals out three single bets, each covering a column on the wheel.

The three single bets are then combined into a group, referred to as the ‘fight’ and the ‘followed’. The ‘fight’ contains seven spaces in which the player can place bets, one for every move the ball makes. If the ball doesn’t make the expected bet on any of these seven bets, the bet is lost. The follow-follow consists of five spaces, again with specific bets for each move the ball makes. If the ball wins, these five spaces will be filled in and another bet will be made on the follow-follow.

There are a number of differences between the standard roulette wheel and the American version of the wheel. The American version includes a straight line, called the shaker, which represents the shaker which is behind the wheel, counting the number of bets that were raised on that pass – this is different than the American version, where the shaker line simply marks the number of bets that were placed on that pass alone. In addition to this, the American version features a four-sided shaker marked on each side of the wheel. On an American table, you would see this marked with either a vertical line or a horizontal line. This means that four of the sides are double the number of the other four sides.

The final difference between the two layouts is found in the way that the bets are placed. In the American version of the wheel, outside bets are paid before the ball is spun. Once the ball is spun, the wheel is turned over, and the outside bets are then made. These outside bets are paid before the winning number is revealed. It is rare for an outside bet to be made before the winning number is revealed on the European roulette board.
